The history of film is also a history of technological development and artistic experiment. The coming of sound, the event of film colour, digital technologies - every leap offered the filmmakers new expressive opportunities which they put to test in their subsequent works. However, not every filmmaker was content with what is possible and many an invention was born out of a desire to fulfil directorial vision. The relationship between artistic expression and the technology enabling it will be the focus of this seminar. Looking at Hollywood cinema, experimental films, video art and today’s hybrid audio-visual landscape and everything in between, the seminar will explore the ever-expanding language of cinema and consider some of the more significant theoretical and critical writing on film while also looking at examples from the history of cinema.
